The Quadriga in antiquity
The name Quadriga (Latin) means the four horses which were harnessed together to draw a military, racing or triumphal chariot.

The Quadriga in art
In art, the Quadriga is generally shown on monuments which commemorate military victories.

The Quadriga on the Rennweg - in the middle ages
In the middle ages the German word "Weg", which now means "road" or "street", had the meaning of "pull" or "drive". Therefore the word probably meant the road which led out of the town and into the country. And the Rennweg, a main thoroughfare in Zurich, was already such a road in Roman times. In those days the Rennweg lay outside the residential area, but was still in the close vicinity of the town.
Scholars today still cannot agree about the exact significance of the name Rennweg: one theory draws attention to the medieval races and jousts which took place there, while the other claims that the Rennweg was a fast road used by messengers on horseback in Roman times.
